Super clone watches, answered from the bench

Twelve questions people ask before a first order. Every answer here comes from opening these watches, putting them on a timing machine and wearing them, not from what a listing claims. Our own commercial interest is declared in the footer below.

What does "super clone" describe, precisely?

It describes the mechanism. A super clone reproduces the layout of the calibre it copies, so the bridges, the jewel positions and the winding train correspond to the original rather than to a generic automatic sitting behind an accurate dial.

You can confirm it in a minute on the bench. Remove the caseback and the plate should look like the calibre it claims to be, not like a movement with a decorated cover over it. The date should flip near midnight instead of drifting across an hour, and the reserve should land close to the published figure rather than half of it.

The phrase itself carries no authority. It sits on listings from thirty dollars upward. The workshop that cut the movement is the fact underneath it.

What is actually inside one?

A Chinese mechanical movement built to clone a named Swiss calibre. It winds from the wrist, runs without a battery, carries jewelled bearings and sweeps the seconds hand at the rate the original sweeps it.

What it is not is Swiss. The parts are made in China, on Chinese tooling, to copy a Swiss layout. The better examples hold a few seconds a day on a timing machine, which is a real achievement for the money and is still not a certified chronometer.

This matters when reading a listing. A watch in this price band described as carrying a Swiss movement is being described incorrectly, whether by mistake or on purpose. Both are worth knowing before payment rather than after.

What does a timing machine reading tell you?

Three numbers, and only one of them is the one buyers ask about.

Rate is the seconds gained or lost per day. It is the headline figure, and it is also the easiest to adjust, so a good rate on its own proves that somebody turned a regulator recently. Beat error measures how evenly the escapement swings in each direction, in milliseconds, and a figure creeping upward points at an escapement out of alignment. Amplitude is the swing of the balance in degrees, and it is the honest indicator of health, because a movement running with low amplitude will lose time regardless of how the regulator is set.

Ask for the reading in more than one position if a seller offers one at all. A movement can look excellent dial up and poor crown down, and you wear a watch in every position across a day.

Which workshop built it, and why does that matter more than the shop?

Because the shop almost never cut the metal. Six workshops assemble what this entire market resells, and a storefront is a reseller with a domain name. The same reference passes across this bench from four different shops in a month and is the same watch four times.

Sorted by what actually arrives here: Clean movements dominate the diver and dual time references. VS work turns up under the fluted bezel pieces. ZF and BP casework appears on the thin integrated bracelet models. VR and AR come through on the day date and the openworked cases. Every one of those leads somewhere and trails elsewhere, which is why a single best is not a thing that exists.

The division is clean. What the workshop did determines the watch you unwrap. What the shop does determines the year after that. Get the first named in writing before you pay, and read the second before you decide who to pay.

How accurate should one be out of the box?

A properly regulated example settles within a handful of seconds a day and stays there. That is the standard worth expecting, and it is achievable on this tier.

A chronograph movement runs wider, and honestly so. The extra wheels and the coupling take energy, and a workshop reporting a broader band on a chronograph is being accurate rather than making excuses.

The pattern to watch for is drift. A watch that reads well on arrival and steadily worse over three weeks was regulated for the photograph and not serviced. That is a bench job rather than a fault, and it is the reason a warranty that covers labour is worth more than one that covers a component list.

What does a warranty on one of these actually cover?

Read the scope before you read the number of months. Duration is what gets advertised and scope is what decides whether a claim is worth making.

Andiot publishes 6 months covering movement failure only, with postage paid by the customer in both directions. Three things follow. A failure in month seven is uncovered. A fault in the bracelet, clasp, crown, crystal or case is uncovered at any point, and those are the parts that fail from ordinary wear. And a valid claim still costs two international parcels, which on a small repair exceeds the repair.

The market norm sits around 75 to 90 days, so that is thin rather than scandalous. Ours runs 24 months on the whole watch, in writing, which is the comparison this site exists to make.

What should one cost?

The only band we can state from our own records is ours. It opens at $1000, tops out at $1550, and every one of the 30 references on this site carries its figure beside the photograph rather than behind a message.

A quote far under it is usually a different product wearing the same two words. The exterior can photograph convincingly while the movement behind it is a stock automatic, and no amount of case finishing changes what a timing machine reports.

A quote far above it raises a question rather than an alarm. Since the workshops supply the whole trade, the extra money is buying inspection, cover and aftercare. Printed terms make that worth paying. Verbal ones make it worth nothing.

Where are these sold?

By message, through a named dealer. Acquiring banks drop this trade on a schedule, so a shop that took cards on a public page last spring is often on its third domain by autumn.

That churn produces the single most expensive mistake available here. Rebuilding a storefront takes an afternoon; the catalogue, the photographs and the layout all copy across intact, and the one line that changes is the account number. Treat the chat handle as the thing being authenticated, and treat the web address as decoration.

Our own commercial position is on every page of this site rather than in a footnote, and no competitor address will be found here.

How often does one need servicing?

On the same schedule as any mechanical watch. A clean, oil and regulate every four to six years keeps one running, and sooner if the rate has drifted badly or the amplitude has dropped.

Most independent watchmakers can do the work. The layout copies a calibre they have opened many times, the tooling is the same, and nothing about the job is exotic. Some decline the work on principle, which is their right and worth asking about before you hand the watch over.

The limit is parts. Nobody can order a component from the brand, so a common part is easy and an unusual one can end the watch. That is the honest ceiling on the tier, and it is the reason cover that includes labour matters more than cover that lists components.

Can a watchmaker tell?

With the caseback off, immediately. The movement is a copy and a watchmaker who works on the real calibre recognises the differences in finishing, in stamping and in component sourcing without effort.

From the outside it is a closer contest. A good clone passes ordinary inspection, and the failures are small: dial printing under magnification, the cyclops magnification factor over the date, the machining where a bracelet meets the case, and the weight in the hand.

The useful conclusion is not that they pass but that this is not what they are for. The purpose is a watch that behaves properly on the wrist, not a document that survives a specialist. Anyone selling one as an investment or as an undetectable substitute is selling something else.

How do you avoid losing your money?

Treat it as four separate verifications rather than a feeling about a website.

Verify the string: spell the domain out, letter by letter, against a source you already trusted. Substituted characters and inserted hyphens are how the whole trick works, and a glance defeats none of them. Verify the endpoint: the chat account is where funds move, so authenticate it apart from the site that pointed you at it. Verify the stock: demand images of the individual watch, since photographs of a piece nobody holds cannot be produced to order. Verify the channel: send money only by a route that can be reversed.

The fourth outranks the other three, because it repairs the damage when they fail. When a seller discounts an unrecoverable payment method, the size of that discount is their own valuation of the protection you are handing over.

Before you order anywhere

Get the workshop name in writing, get photographs of your actual watch, and pay by a method you can dispute. Our terms against theirs sets out the after-sale difference, and the verdict on Andiot covers their published warranty in full.
